Indonesia-India: A Celebration of Friendship at Republic Day 2025
President Prabowo Subianto made history as the fourth Indonesian leader to be honored as the Chief Guest at India’s Republic Day celebrations, joining the ranks of Presidents Sukarno, Suharto, and Joko Widodo. This invitation not only highlighted the longstanding cultural and historical ties between India and Indonesia but also reinforced the nations’ growing strategic partnership.
The Republic Day parade in New Delhi saw a proud display of camaraderie, as 352 Indonesian troops marched in perfect harmony, showcasing their discipline and deep respect for the occasion. This marked the first time such a large contingent from Indonesia participated in the iconic event, symbolizing the military and cultural synergy shared by the two nations. The contingent included a 190-member band, Genderang Suling Canka Lokananta, from the Indonesian Military Academy (Akmil) and 152 personnel Marching Contingent, from all branches of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI).

In a heartfelt and memorable address, President Prabowo shared a personal revelation that struck a chord with many. “A few weeks ago, I had my genetic sequencing test, and they told me I have Indian DNA. Everybody knows when I hear Indian music, I start dancing,” he said, drawing smiles from both Indian and Indonesian audiences. He expressed his pride in standing alongside India on this momentous occasion, wishing its people “prosperity, peace, and greatness” for the future.

The warmth of this visit extended to President Droupadi Murmu’s banquet, where the Indonesian delegation delighted everyone by singing Shah Rukh Khan’s classic hit, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. This light-hearted moment was a testament to the cultural affinity and shared love for Bollywood that bonds the two nations.
Accompanying President Prabowo was a high-level delegation, including ministers and business leaders. Over 100 Indonesian entrepreneurs participated in the Indonesia-India Business Forum (CEO Forum) held in New Delhi from January 24-28, 2025. Bernardino Moningka Vega, Deputy Chairman for Foreign Relations of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), highlighted the focus on five strategic sectors: healthcare, agriculture, manufacturing, energy, and technology.
At a business forum held at the Mansingh Ballroom, Taj Mahal Hotel, New Delhi, Anindya Bakrie emphasized Indonesia’s strong commitment to food security and manufacturing partnerships, stating, “Indonesia is very serious about partnering for food security and manufacturing, collaboration for shared growth.” He also highlighted the significance of energy transition and digital innovation, mentioning, “We have industry captains in Indonesia and technology expertise in AI, digital, and fintech.”
These agreements aim to deepen cooperation and create new avenues for economic growth and innovation.
This visit reaffirmed the shared vision of Indonesia and India as partners in regional and global progress. Beyond politics and economics, the spirit of the celebrations, from the parade to cultural exchanges, underscored the enduring friendship between the world’s largest democracies.
